The movie Udaan took a big flight with the 17th Annual Screen Awards held at the MMRDA grounds in Mumbai on Thursday night. This small film, directed by debutant director Vikramaditya Motwane, has not just proved a favourite at international film festivals, but beat blockbusters such as Dabangg, My Name is Khan, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai to bag the Best Film and the Best Director awards.
With six awards including Best Actor for Salman Khan and Best Choreography for Farah Khan, the glitzy night was for the Dabangg camp. But Salman Khan was missing from the show. It has been reported that he quietly left after recording a video to be screened later for he was shooting for another film. But it has been said he did not want to bump into Shah Rukh Khan, who was hosting the show with Shahid Kapur.
Vidya Balan was the other big winner for her role in Ishqiya, while Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh won the most promising male and female awards. Shah Rukh's My Name is Khan won him best actor and Rajneeti won Katrina Kaif the best actress in the popular choice category. Arshad Warsi, Shernaz Patel and Rahat Fateh Ali were some of the other winners but Ajay Devgn was announced the performer of the year.
Katrina Kaif, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra set the stage on fire with some of their chartbusting numbers.
