Singapore: Bollywood newbies Ranvir Singh, Sonakshi Sinha and Abhinav Kashyap were the highlight of the 12th Zee Cine Awards held at the main ballroom of the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore last night.
Singh, who starred in this year’s surprise hit Band Bajaa Barat won Best Debut Male and Sinha, whose debut film Dabangg, has broken box office records in India won the female equivalent. Dabangg is also Kashya’s debut film as director. He won the best Debutant Director award.
Stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Arjun Rampal, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone performed in the show hosted by Akshay Kumar and Sajid Khan.
At the time of going to the press, blockbuster Dabangg had won majority of awards including song of the year for Munni Badnaam Hui.
The film also won a host of technical awards including best editing, best music and best action.
Veteran actor Shahtrughan Sinha was honoured with the Lifetime Achivement Award, while Padukone and Ranbir Kappor were given International Icon awards for female and male respectively.
Critically acclaimed film Udaan was honoured with a Best Jury Film award.
Earlier, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, said at a press conference: “I am fortunate to be the hug and smile ambassador for India.”
Khan, who made a surprise entry, was answering a question about whether or not he considers himself a cultural icon and ambassador for India.
The actor was one of many Bollywood stars who performed at the star studded evening held at the city state’s newest landmark, the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort.
“I go to the Arab world, South East Asia and all over the world and there is this common bond about Bollywood and I feel privileged to be part of this industry,” he said.
Khan, who was joined on stage at the press conference by Puneet Goenka, CEO of Zee Entertainment Limited, the organizer and executives from Marina Bay Sands.
He joked to the attendees about how excited he was to be back in Singapore, and the resort.
“Even the toilets are amazing, they open by themselves. It’s like gremlins are in there,” he said, drawing much laughter.
The Zee Cine Awards are held in different locations every year, including Dubai in 2004.
